Ask someone for their star sign and there is a good chance they will tell you, immediately followed by a story about how typical it is of them. Zodiac signs are one of the most popular ways of talking about personality and compatibility, and the simplest way into the subject is through the four elements: fire, earth, air and water.
In this guide we explain what the elements are, how traditional astrology says they pair up, and how to use the idea for fun without letting it run your love life.
The twelve signs and their dates
Western astrology divides the year into twelve sun signs, based on the date you were born. The dates below are the commonly used ones. If you were born close to the edge of a sign, different sources may place you on either side of the line.
| Sign | Dates | Element |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | Dec 22 to Jan 19 | Earth |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 to Feb 18 | Air |
| Pisces | Feb 19 to Mar 20 | Water |
| Aries | Mar 21 to Apr 19 | Fire |
| Taurus | Apr 20 to May 20 | Earth |
| Gemini | May 21 to Jun 20 | Air |
| Cancer | Jun 21 to Jul 22 | Water |
| Leo | Jul 23 to Aug 22 | Fire |
| Virgo | Aug 23 to Sep 22 | Earth |
| Libra | Sep 23 to Oct 22 | Air |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 to Nov 21 | Water |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 to Dec 21 | Fire |
What each element represents
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire signs are traditionally described as energetic, enthusiastic and bold. They tend to be associated with passion, confidence and a love of adventure. In relationships, they are said to bring warmth and excitement, and they may need a partner who can keep up with their pace or give them room to chase new ideas.
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth signs are linked with practicality, patience and loyalty. They are often described as steady and dependable, with a taste for comfort, routine and long-term goals. In love they are said to show care through reliability: showing up, planning ahead and building something solid.
Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs are associated with ideas, conversation and curiosity. They are traditionally seen as sociable and thoughtful, and they often value mental connection as much as emotional connection. A partner who enjoys talking, joking and exploring new subjects tends to suit them.
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water signs are connected with emotion, intuition and empathy. They are described as deeply feeling and protective, with a strong need for closeness and trust. In relationships they are said to want emotional honesty and a sense of safety.
How the elements are said to pair up
Traditional astrology offers some general rules of thumb about how elements get along.
- Fire and fire: lively and passionate, with plenty of shared enthusiasm. The risk is that two strong personalities compete.
- Fire and air: often described as an energising mix, because air is said to feed fire. Ideas and action tend to fuel each other.
- Earth and earth: stable and dependable, with shared values around security. The risk is slipping into routine.
- Earth and water: seen as nurturing, because water helps earth grow. Practical care meets emotional depth.
- Air and air: full of conversation and curiosity, though sometimes short on emotional follow-through.
- Water and water: intuitive and tender, with a deep emotional bond. Moods can amplify one another.
- Fire and water: considered a challenge, because water can calm or dampen fire. It can also be a pairing of opposites that learn from each other.
- Air and earth: a contrast of big ideas and practical steps. Each may find the other puzzling at first.
Notice that none of these descriptions says a pairing is doomed. Even in astrology, "challenging" usually means "different", and differences can make a relationship richer as well as harder.
Beyond the sun sign
A sun sign is only one part of an astrological birth chart. Astrologers also look at the position of the moon, the rising sign and the planets at the moment of birth. This is one reason that people often say "I do not feel like a typical Leo": their sun sign is a single piece of a much larger picture. Compatibility readings that rely only on sun signs, including the ones in most online calculators, are intentionally simple and playful.
An honest word about the evidence
Astrology is a cultural tradition with a long history, and many people enjoy it as a source of stories, reflection and conversation. It is important to be clear, however, that controlled studies have not found that star signs predict personality or relationship outcomes. The reason it feels accurate is partly the way the descriptions are written: broad, positive and flexible enough to fit most people, which is the same effect we explain in our article on how love calculators work.
That does not make it worthless. Plenty of enjoyable things, from horoscopes to board games, are valuable because they make us reflect, laugh and talk to each other. The key is to hold the results lightly and never to use a star sign as a reason to stay in, or leave, a relationship.
Ways to use zodiac compatibility for fun
- As an icebreaker. Asking "what is your sign?" is an easy way to start a conversation, and sharing how well it fits can be a safe, playful way to learn about each other.
- As a mirror. If a description of your sign sounds right, ask yourself why. If it sounds wrong, that tells you something too.
- As a game with friends. Compare results for each other, for celebrity couples or for your favourite fictional pairings.
- As a gift idea. Knowing someone's sign can inspire a thoughtful present, from a birthstone to a colour palette. See our guide to birthstones and aesthetic palettes for ideas.
Try it yourself
The Zodiac Love Compatibility tool on LoveBloom takes two birth dates, works out each sign and element and shows how the pairing is traditionally read. Our main love calculator also uses the zodiac element of each person as one part of its overall score, alongside a name-based part. If your family also follows the Chinese zodiac, read our guide to Chinese zodiac compatibility for a second perspective.
Whatever the result, remember that a good relationship is built from communication, respect and shared effort, not from the date on a birth certificate.
