Numerology is the belief that numbers carry symbolic meaning, and that the numbers in your name and birth date say something about your character. It has been practised in various forms for centuries, and today it is a popular way to reflect on personality and relationships. You do not need to believe in it to enjoy it: the calculations are simple, and the descriptions make good conversation.
The most common numerology figure is the life path number, worked out from your full date of birth. This guide shows you exactly how to calculate it, what each number is traditionally said to represent, and how to use the idea when comparing two people.
How to calculate your life path number
The method is called digit reduction. You add together every digit in your birth date, then keep adding the digits of the result until you are left with a single digit from 1 to 9.
- Write your birth date in numbers, with the day, month and full four-digit year.
- Add every digit together.
- If the total has more than one digit, add those digits together.
- Repeat until you reach a single digit.
Here is a worked example. Suppose someone was born on 14 March 1998. Written as numbers, that is 14, 03 and 1998, which gives the digits 1, 4, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9 and 8. Adding them: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 35. Then 3 + 5 = 8. This person's life path number is 8.
Some systems treat 11, 22 and 33 as "master numbers" and stop reducing when they appear. If your total reaches one of these at any stage, you may see your reading described with both the master number and its reduced form, such as 11 and 2.
What each number is traditionally said to mean
- 1: the leader. Independent, determined and original. Often described as someone who likes to take the first step.
- 2: the peacemaker. Cooperative, sensitive and diplomatic. Thought to value harmony and partnership.
- 3: the creative. Expressive, sociable and optimistic. Associated with humour, storytelling and self-expression.
- 4: the builder. Practical, disciplined and loyal. Described as someone who creates stability through effort.
- 5: the explorer. Adventurous, curious and adaptable. Said to dislike routine and love variety.
- 6: the nurturer. Caring, responsible and family-minded. Often linked with looking after others.
- 7: the seeker. Thoughtful, analytical and private. Associated with study, reflection and independence.
- 8: the achiever. Ambitious, organised and driven. Linked with goals, leadership and results.
- 9: the humanitarian. Compassionate, idealistic and generous. Described as someone who cares about the bigger picture.
Using numbers to compare two people
Numerology compatibility readings take two life path numbers and describe how they might interact. Traditional descriptions often group numbers by temperament: for instance, 1, 5 and 7 are sometimes called independent, curious numbers, while 2, 4, 6 and 8 are described as more steady and relationship-oriented, and 3 and 9 as warm, expressive and idealistic. A pairing within the same group is said to feel familiar, while a pairing from different groups is said to bring balance as well as friction.
Take two examples. A 4 and an 8 are often described as a practical, goal-oriented pair who understand each other's work ethic. A 3 and a 7 might be seen as an unusual pairing, one outgoing and one reflective, who can learn a lot from each other if they stay curious. Neither reading predicts anything. They are conversation starters, no more and no less.
Other numbers worth knowing
Life path numbers are only one part of the system. Numerologists also work with:
- The birthday number: just the day of the month you were born, said to describe a particular talent or strength.
- The expression or destiny number: built from the letters in your full birth name, using a letter-to-number chart where A is 1, B is 2 and so on, repeating after 9.
- The soul urge number: built from only the vowels in your name and said to describe inner motivation.
This is the same idea of turning letters into numbers that powers many name-based love calculators, which we describe in our guide to how love calculators work.
Why numerology feels so personal
Numerology descriptions tend to be broad and positive, and most people can find something in them that fits. This is known as the Barnum effect: we readily accept general statements as personal insight. There is no scientific evidence that a life path number predicts character or compatibility, so it is best treated as a symbolic game rather than a measurement.
That does not stop it from being useful in a different way. Reading about your number encourages you to ask yourself questions you might otherwise skip. Do you recognise yourself as a builder or an explorer? Does it describe the person you want to be rather than the person you are? Those questions are valuable whether or not the number "means" anything.
Ways to enjoy numerology as a couple
- Calculate each other's numbers. Do the arithmetic together, then read the descriptions out loud and rate how accurate they feel from one to ten.
- Look for the funny parts. Notice which traits make you laugh because they fit perfectly, and which are obviously wrong.
- Use it for planning. If one of you is an "explorer" and the other a "builder", use the labels to talk about how to balance spontaneous plans and steady routines.
- Keep it light. The moment a number is used to argue about who is right, put the calculator away.
Numerology and "angel numbers"
You may also have seen repeated numbers such as 111, 444 or 1212 described as "angel numbers", messages from the universe in the form of repeating digits. This is a separate modern spiritual idea rather than part of classical numerology, but the two overlap in how they treat numbers as symbols. We explore the idea, and the psychology behind noticing patterns, in our article on tarot, angel numbers and self-reflection.
Try the calculators
You can skip the arithmetic with the Birth Date Numerology Matcher, which works out life path numbers from two birth dates and shows how the pairing is traditionally described. If you enjoy number symbolism, the Manifestation Angel Number Calculator offers another playful take.
Whatever you decide about numerology, it makes a gentle, creative prompt for a conversation about who you are and who you are becoming together.
